Frigidaire Cooktop Will Not Turn On — Lock-Out and Power Fixes

TL;DR: When a Frigidaire cooktop will not turn on, the cause is almost always an active control lock, a tripped double-pole breaker, or a loose 240-volt connection behind the unit, not a dead control board.

When a frigidaire cooktop will not turn on at all — no glow, no display, no clicking — it is easy to assume the control board has died, but on a Frigidaire cooktop the cause is far more often a lock that is still engaged or power that never reaches the unit. Understanding how the controls and supply work makes this a quick fix in most kitchens.

A Frigidaire cooktop runs on a dedicated circuit: radiant and induction models on a 240-volt double-pole breaker, gas models on a standard 120-volt outlet for the igniters. If either leg of that supply drops, or the control lock is active, the surface behaves as if it is dead.

How a frigidaire cooktop will not turn on situation develops

Frigidaire glass cooktops use Express-Select or Ready-Select touch controls and a child or control lock. Hold the lock pad for a few seconds and the panel locks out every zone, showing an “L”, a dash, or a small key icon. Until you unlock it, no element responds. Separately, a 240-volt cooktop fed by a double-pole breaker can lose just one of its two legs in a partial trip; the panel may stay dark or behave erratically because it is only getting half its supply. Touch panels also need a clean, dry, bare-finger contact, so a wet cloth or a gloved hand can stop them registering.

Steps to try

  • Hold the OFF or lock pad for three to six seconds to clear the control lock, then test a zone.
  • Go to the panel and flip the cooktop breaker fully OFF, then ON. On a double-pole breaker, push past the trip point firmly so both legs reset.
  • Wipe the glass-touch controls dry and operate them with a clean, bare fingertip.
  • For a gas model, confirm the 120-volt outlet has power and the unit is plugged in; the burners will not spark without it.
  • Check for a wall switch or GFCI that may feed the cooktop circuit and has been switched off.

If the controls light up again after the lock and breaker resets, you are done. If the panel stays completely dark with confirmed power at the breaker, the fault has moved past the simple checks. Our guide on a Frigidaire cooktop element not heating covers single-zone faults once the cooktop powers up.

How the lock and demo modes confuse things

Two normal features routinely get mistaken for a dead cooktop. The first is the control lock itself, which many owners trigger by accident while cleaning the glass, since wiping across the touch pads can hold the lock button long enough to engage it. The second is a panel that lights but will not start an element because a Hot-Surface Indicator or a paused setting is active. Before assuming a failure, read the panel carefully for an “L”, a key icon, or a flashing prompt, and consult the quick-start card for your model so you are not chasing a fault that is really just a setting.

When the control board or supply is at fault

A cooktop that stays dead with good power at the breaker usually has a failed control board, a tripped internal thermal cut-out, or a loose, scorched wire at the terminal block behind the unit. On 240-volt appliances those connections carry serious current, so this is a job for an experienced technician with a meter rather than a DIY guess. Many service calls also turn up a breaker that needs replacing because it trips under load. You can match your unit against our Frigidaire cooktop models list before booking.
