A Frigidaire gas cooktop igniter is a spark igniter beside each sealed burner: when you turn a knob, gas flows from the valve while the igniter clicks a spark across the burner, and the gas catches. The parts that have to work together are the knob and its igniter switch, the spark module that feeds the igniters, the igniter itself, the burner cap and ports, and the gas supply. When one burner clicks but does not light, the cause is almost always at that burner: a dirty or wet igniter, blocked ports or a cap that is off-center.

Knob and igniter switchTurning the knob opens the gas flow and starts the clicking
Spark moduleFeeds the igniters; needs the cooktop’s 120-volt supply to spark
IgniterThrows the spark across the burner; food or moisture on it stops ignition
Burner cap and portsSpread the gas and flame; an off-center cap or clogged ports stop the spark and gas meeting
Gas supply and valveBrings the gas; valve and supply work are for a technician

How does a Frigidaire gas cooktop light a burner?

A sealed gas burner lights when two things happen at the same moment: gas flows from the valve to the burner, and a spark crosses the gap at the igniter. When you push in and turn a knob, you open the gas flow and start the clicking. The clicking is the spark. As soon as gas reaches the flame ports around the spark, it ignites and the clicking should stop. Our guide to a Frigidaire range burner not lighting uses the same description, and it is the right place to start if a burner will not catch.

Gas cooktops do not report error codes, so a failed igniter does not show a number on a display. You diagnose by what you see and hear: a burner that clicks and does not light, a burner that does not click at all, or every burner clicking at once.

What does each part do?

The knob is not only a valve handle. Under it sits an igniter switch that starts the spark when you turn the knob. The spark module takes the cooktop’s power and delivers the pulses that make the igniters spark, which is why a gas cooktop needs a working 120-volt outlet even though it burns gas. Without power the burners will not spark. The igniter is a small tip that sits beside the burner head. The burner cap sits over the head and shapes where the gas comes out through small ports. The valve controls how much gas goes to each burner, and the supply line with its shutoff brings gas to the cooktop.

The reason this matters is that a failure in a shared part looks very different from a failure in a single burner. A dead module or no power affects every burner. A dirty igniter or a clogged port affects one.

Why does a burner click but not light?

This is the most common igniter complaint, and the checks cost nothing. Spills and grease bake onto the igniter and clog the tiny flame ports. A burner cap knocked slightly off-center means the spark and the gas never meet. Moisture from a spill or from cleaning can short the igniter so it clicks without catching. According to our burner guide, the fixes are to let the burner dry fully, clean the igniter with a toothbrush, clear each flame port with a straightened paperclip, and reseat the cap squarely on the base. Try lighting again after each step, but do not hold the knob in while the burner clicks without a flame; turn it off, and if you smell gas at any point, stop and follow the gas steps below. Do all of this with the burners off and cold, and with the cooktop cleaned only on the surface; do not take the cooktop apart.

What if no burner clicks, or they all click at once?

If none of the burners click, think shared parts rather than one burner. Check that the cooktop is plugged in and that the outlet has power, because the spark module runs on household current. If the supply is fine and nothing clicks, the spark module is the suspect, and that is a technician’s job. If turning one knob makes every burner click, the igniter switch under that knob is likely shorted. If a burner lights but the flame is weak, yellow or uneven, the ports need cleaning or the burner needs adjustment. These deeper faults involve the gas valves and electrical switches, so we do not recommend working on them yourself. Our guide on a Frigidaire cooktop that will not turn on covers the power side.

Which Frigidaire gas cooktops use this system?

All of our gas cooktop models are sealed-burner designs. The FGGC3047QS is a 30-inch Gallery model with five sealed burners and an 18,000 BTU center burner. The FGGC3645QS is a 36-inch Gallery model with five sealed burners, including an 18,000 BTU Quick Boil burner. The FFGC3026SS is a 30-inch model with four sealed burners and a 15,000 BTU Quick Boil burner. These pages also note that gas cooktops are diagnosed by symptom rather than by code. For care that keeps the igniters working, read our Frigidaire cooktop cleaning and maintenance guide.

What should you never do with a gas cooktop?

If you smell gas, do not turn anything on or off, do not try to light a burner and do not use a phone or switch in the room. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not try to find a leak with soap or a flame. Do not disconnect a gas line, remove the cooktop or open its panels; the gas connection and the valves are work for a licensed technician. A burner that clicks and never lights should be turned off at the knob rather than left to click while gas flows. If you smell gas, do not stay to turn the knob: leave first. Never work at a gas valve or supply line yourself. When cleaning is not enough, Frigidaire cooktop repair covers igniters, switches and valves, and you can book a visit.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Frigidaire gas cooktop igniter keep clicking?
It keeps clicking because there is no flame to tell it to stop. The usual causes are a wet or dirty igniter, blocked ports or a burner cap that is not seated squarely. Turn the knob off, let the burner dry, clean the igniter and ports and reseat the cap.
Do I need electricity for a gas cooktop to light?
Yes. The cooktop is plugged into a standard 120-volt outlet to power the spark module and igniters, so a dead outlet or a loose plug stops every burner from sparking.
Can I replace an igniter myself?
We do not recommend it. The igniter sits with the gas and electrical parts, and a wrong fit can leave a burner that will not light safely. Cleaning and reseating the cap are fine; replacement is a technician’s job.
What if all the burners click when I turn one knob?
The igniter switch under that knob is likely shorted. Leave it and book a visit, because the switch is an electrical part.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Do not switch anything on or off or try to light a burner. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
