A frigidaire range burner not lighting on a gas cooktop is one of the more common and more fixable kitchen complaints, and most of the time it has nothing to do with a failed part. A surface burner that clicks but will not light, or does not click at all, is usually fighting a dirty igniter, a food-clogged port, or a burner cap sitting slightly off-center. Each of those you can address yourself in a few minutes.
Gas cooktops do not report fault codes, so this is diagnosed by symptom rather than by a number on a display. Work from the simplest causes outward.
Why a frigidaire range burner not lighting happens
A sealed gas burner lights when a spark igniter fires across the burner while gas flows from the valve. Spills and grease bake onto the igniter and clog the tiny flame ports, the burner cap can be knocked out of alignment so the spark and gas never meet, and moisture from a spill or a cleaning can short the igniter so it clicks continuously without lighting. Less often the trouble is the spark module, the igniter switch under the knob, or the gas supply itself.
First checks you can do
- Confirm the gas is on — check that another burner lights and that the supply valve and any range shutoff are open.
- Let the burner dry fully if it was recently cleaned or spilled on; a wet igniter clicks but will not light.
- Clean the igniter with a toothbrush and clear each flame port with a straightened paperclip; baked-on food is the leading cause.
- Lift off the burner cap and reseat it squarely on the base — an off-center cap stops ignition.
- Wipe under the cap and around the base so the spark can reach the gas cleanly.
Try lighting again after each step. If one burner is dead but the igniter clicks for it, the problem is almost always at that burner — the cap, the ports, or the igniter — rather than the whole cooktop.
When several burners will not click
If none of the burners click, suspect the spark module or the power and gas supply rather than a single burner. If one knob clicks every burner at once, the igniter switch under that knob is likely shorted. And if a burner lights but the flame is weak, yellow, or uneven, the ports need a thorough cleaning or the burner needs adjustment. These deeper faults are worth a hands-on look, since they involve the gas valves and electrical switches. Our range repair service covers igniter, switch, and valve work.
A note on the oven side
If it is the oven rather than a surface burner that will not heat, that is a different diagnosis — a gas oven uses a bake igniter and safety valve, not the surface spark system. Start instead with our guide on a Frigidaire oven not heating, which covers the oven heating path.
Keeping the burners clean is the best prevention here. Wipe up boil-overs once the cooktop has cooled, lift and clean the caps and grates regularly, and dry everything thoroughly before relighting, since trapped moisture is a frequent reason a burner clicks without catching. A burner that has been lighting slowly for a while is usually telling you the ports are gradually clogging, so a thorough cleaning at that first sign often heads off a no-light call entirely.
