Frigidaire countertop ice maker setup is quick, but a few steps decide whether it works the first time: choose a flat, steady surface with open space around its vents, let it stand upright if it was carried on its side, clean it as the manual says, fill the water reservoir to the fill mark, plug it into a standard outlet and press start. The indicator lights then tell you when to add water and when the ice bin is full. The details differ by model, so keep your owner’s manual beside you.

Where should a countertop ice maker go?

Pick a counter that is flat, solid and dry, close to an outlet, and not under a cabinet that traps heat. A countertop ice maker has a cooling system, so it needs air to move around it, and the manual tells you how much space the vents need on your model. Keep it away from the stove, a sunny window and a dishwasher vent, because a warm spot makes it work harder and slows the ice. Check that it sits level on the counter. A unit that tilts can fill unevenly and may leak.

Do you need to wait before you plug it in?

If the ice maker was carried on its side or upside down, check your owner’s manual for whether it asks you to let the unit stand upright before it is started, as many cooling appliances do. We do not state a time here, because it differs by model. Remove any packing material and tape, take out the ice basket and scoop, and wipe the inside as the manual describes. Following the manual’s wait is better than a first start that could damage the unit.

How do you fill and start it?

Pour fresh water into the reservoir only up to the fill mark, and never above it. Plug the cord straight into a grounded outlet. Do not use an adapter, and do not use an extension cord that carries other appliances. Press the power or ice button as the manual shows. Our model page for the EFIC102 says it makes its first ice in about 13 minutes, but the pace differs by model, so use your own manual’s figure. The ice basket should be in place before ice begins to drop, and the bin collects the batch.

What kind of ice does it make?

That depends on the model. Our product line page lists portable models such as the EFIC108 that make up to 26 lb of bullet ice per day with a bin of about 1.5 lb, and countertop nugget models such as the EFIC201 and EFIC228-SS that make up to 33 lb of chewable nugget ice per day. The EFIC201 is listed with touch controls and a self-clean cycle, and the EFIC227 is listed as a 2-in-1 with a built-in water tap. Those are the figures the pages publish, and your owner’s manual is the source for your own unit. Browse the portable ice maker line to see which fits.

What do the lights tell you?

Our page for the EFIC108 says the ice maker has no error codes and only indicator lights, Add Water and Ice Full, and that every problem is therefore diagnosed by symptom. When the Add Water light comes on, fill the reservoir. When Ice Full comes on, the bin is full, and the unit stops making ice until you remove some. A countertop ice maker also melts ice into its reservoir over time, which is normal, and the manual describes how to drain it. Do not put your hand into the machine while it is running. If neither light is on and the unit is silent, check that the plug is fully seated in a working outlet and that the bin and the reservoir are seated as the manual shows, because some units will not run with a part out of place. Throw away the first batch of ice if your owner’s manual says to.

What water and care keep the ice clean?

Use fresh, clean drinking water each time you fill the reservoir, and do not leave water standing in the unit for days when you are not using it. Empty and dry the reservoir and bin when you put the ice maker away. Wipe the inside as your manual describes, and do not use harsh chemicals unless the manual names them. If your model has a self-clean cycle, the manual explains how to run it. Ice that tastes stale or looks cloudy is usually a sign that the water or the bin needs attention, not that the machine is broken, and a thorough clean often fixes it. Keep the cord and plug dry and away from the spot where water might drip.

What if it does not make ice?

Check the simple things first: water in the reservoir, the unit on a level surface, the vents clear, the room not too hot and the ice bin not full. Our ice maker not making ice guide goes through the causes in order, and our ice maker cleaning guide covers upkeep. If the unit leaks, unplug it only if the floor and outlet are dry, otherwise switch off the breaker from a dry floor. See also our leaking ice maker guide.

Place it on a flat counter with space around the vents, let it stand if it was moved on its side, fill the reservoir to the mark, plug it into a standard outlet and start it as the manual describes.
Does a countertop ice maker need a water line?

How long before the first ice?
It differs by model, so use your owner’s manual. Our EFIC102 page lists about 13 minutes for first ice, but that is for that model.
