All of them are reached by holding button combinations, and all of them can be entered by accident. A power flicker during a storm can also leave the control part-way through its startup routine.
Showroom mode is the one that genuinely matters, because a refrigerator in it looks fully alive and does not cool. Anyone who has bought a floor model or had one delivered from a display floor has met this.
The sequence that clears most of it
- Unplug the refrigerator, or switch off its breaker. Do not simply open the door.
- Leave it off for at least five minutes. The control needs time for its capacitors to drain; a quick off-on often restores the same state.
- Restore power and let the panel complete its own startup before touching anything.
- Do not press buttons during startup. That is the window in which combinations are read.
- Watch for ten minutes. The compressor should start within that time and the display should return to temperatures.
If the code comes straight back after a proper power cycle, it is not a stray state — the control is reporting something persistent, and that changes the diagnosis.
Finding the exact meaning for your model
Control codes are not standard across the range. The same two characters can mean different things on a French door model and a top freezer of the same age, and the button combination that exits a mode differs too. Guessing combinations is how people end up deeper in the menu system.
Find the model and serial number — usually on a plate inside the fresh food compartment along the left wall, or behind the crisper drawers — and use that to look up the correct documentation for your exact machine. When the code is really about the appliance
Some displays genuinely report faults, and the pattern to watch is a code that returns immediately and repeatedly after power cycling, especially alongside symptoms. The combinations worth taking seriously:
- Code plus a warm fresh food side while the freezer is cold — airflow, a damper or the evaporator fan.
- Code plus a compressor that never runs — control board, start components or the sealed system.
- Code plus frost on the freezer’s rear wall — a defrost fault, which will also eventually starve the fresh food side of air.
- Code plus a compressor that runs without ever stopping — often dirty condenser coils, sometimes a sensor reporting the wrong temperature.
A sensor failure is worth calling out, because it produces exactly this combination of an odd display and wrong temperatures. The control is not lying — it is faithfully acting on bad information.
What not to do
Do not leave a refrigerator in an unknown state for days hoping it resolves. If the appliance is not cooling, move the food to a cooler or a neighbor’s freezer while you work out what is happening. Do not cycle the power repeatedly over and over, either — a compressor restarted against a still-pressurized system is being asked to start under load, and repeated attempts are hard on it. Give it five minutes between tries.
Finally, do not work through button combinations found for a different model. At best nothing happens; at worst you change a setting you did not know existed and cannot find again.
When to call
Call when the code returns immediately after a proper power cycle, when the appliance is not holding temperature, when the compressor never starts or never stops, or when the panel is unresponsive to any input. Those are control, sensor or sealed-system matters rather than display states.
