- Identify your filter. PureSource Ultra II usually sits in the upper-rear of the fresh-food compartment or in a grille at the base; PureSource 3 is typically a twist cartridge inside the cabinet. Check the model label or your manual if unsure.
- Have a towel ready, since a little water can drip when the cartridge releases.
- For a push-in style, press the release button or push the filter in and let it spring out, then pull it free. For a twist style, rotate it about a quarter turn counter-clockwise and slide it out.
- Remove the protective caps from the new cartridge and line it up the same way the old one sat.
- Push it in until it clicks, or insert and twist clockwise until it locks. It should seat without forcing.
- Flush two to four quarts of water through the dispenser to clear trapped air and carbon fines. The first pours may sputter or run gray — that is normal and clears quickly.
Finally, reset the filter-status indicator if your model has one, usually by holding the filter-reset button for a few seconds, so the change-filter light starts a fresh six-month count.
Why a fresh filter matters more than people think
Beyond taste, the filter protects the whole water path. As it clogs, flow drops, the dispenser slows to a trickle, and the ice maker can stop filling, which sends owners chasing a fault that a five-dollar habit would have prevented. Replacing the cartridge roughly every six months — sooner in hard-water homes — keeps the dispenser strong and the ice maker fed. If your ice maker has already stopped, the filter is the first thing to rule out before suspecting the inlet valve.
If flow is still weak after a new filter
A fresh filter that does not restore flow points to a different cause: a frozen fill or dispenser line, a closed or kinked supply, a failed water inlet valve, or low household pressure. These are worth a proper look rather than another filter.
