TL;DR: When a Frigidaire dryer won't start, check power and the two-pole breaker, close the door firmly, release any control lock and hold Start. A hum without a turning drum points to the belt or motor, and a dead dryer may have a blown thermal fuse.

When a Frigidaire dryer won’t start, the cause is almost always one of four simple things: no power at the outlet or breaker, a door that is not fully latched, a control lock or an unfinished button sequence, or a safety part such as the thermal fuse or drive belt. Work through them in that order, because the first three cost nothing to check and account for most of the calls we hear about. What the dryer does when you press Start tells you where to look: a dark display points to power, a lit display with no motion points to the door or the controls, and a hum with no turning drum points to the motor or the belt.

Why won’t my Frigidaire dryer start?

Dryers are built so that nothing runs unless every safety condition is met: the door is closed and latched, power reaches the control, and the control accepts a Start command. Any one of those missing looks identical from the front, a dryer that sits there. That is good news in one sense, since the cheap causes are very common, and it is why we start every diagnosis with the same short checklist. If you reach the end of it and the dryer still does nothing, the fault is a component, and the checklist will have told you which group of components to suspect.

What should I check first?

  1. Is the display lit? If it is dark when you press a button, you have a power problem, not a dryer problem. Test the outlet with a lamp, and reset the breaker by switching it fully off and then on.
  2. Check both halves of a two-pole breaker. An electric dryer runs on a double breaker. If one half trips, the control may light but the drum and heater will not run. Switch the whole breaker off and back on.
  3. Close the door firmly. The door switch must be pressed by the latch. A bulging load, a sock caught at the edge, or a worn latch can keep the switch open. Try opening and closing it with a firm push.
  4. Look for a control lock. If a lock light is on or a lock icon shows, the panel ignores presses until the lock is released as your manual describes.
  5. Select a cycle, then press and hold Start. Many Frigidaire dryers need Start held for about a second. A press that is too short is ignored.
  6. Unplug for five minutes. For a gas or electric dryer on a cord, unplug it, wait, and plug it back in. This clears a control that has locked up after a power flicker.

If the dryer has a code, look it up before going further. Our dryer error codes guide and the EAF page cover the control-board code, and our dryer heat error codes guide covers E64 and the heat-related codes.

What if the dryer hums but the drum does not turn?

A hum with no rotation means the motor is trying to run. Switch the dryer off and unplug it. Reach into the drum and try to turn it by hand. If the drum spins freely with almost no resistance, the drive belt has probably broken or slipped off, because the motor is turning without driving anything. If the drum is hard to turn or makes a grinding noise, a drum roller or the motor itself may be seizing. A drum that turns normally but still will not run on power points to the motor or its start components.

Do not remove the cabinet panels with the dryer plugged in. The terminals behind them carry household voltage, and on a gas dryer the burner assembly sits nearby. If you smell gas at any time, leave the area, do not touch switches, and call your gas utility. Belt and motor work is a technician job for most households, and we can arrange it through Frigidaire dryer repair.

Could a safety part be stopping the dryer from starting?

Yes. A dryer has thermal safety devices that cut power when it overheats, and on many models a blown thermal fuse leaves the dryer completely dead until it is replaced. The usual reason it blew is restricted airflow: a clogged lint screen, a crushed vent hose or a vent packed with lint makes the drum air run hot, and the safety device does its job. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent only restores the problem. Before any part is changed, clear the lint screen and the vent. Our dryer vent cleaning guide shows how, and the E8C code, the high-limit thermostat tripping from overheating, is the same warning shown on a model with a display.

The thermal fuse is a small, inexpensive part, but it must be tested, not guessed at, and the right part depends on your model. A technician checks it with a meter, finds out why it opened, and fits the matching replacement.

Does the problem change if the dryer starts and then stops?

It does. A dryer that runs for a few minutes and stops is usually overheating, so look at the vent and the lint screen first. A dryer that runs but takes forever to dry is a separate complaint, and our guide to a Frigidaire dryer taking too long covers it. If it runs without heat, use our Frigidaire dryer not heating guide. A dryer that works only when you hold the door shut has a worn door latch or switch, a quick repair for a technician.

When is it time to call a technician?

Call when you have power at the outlet, a closed door, no lock, a proper Start press, and a five-minute reset, and the dryer still will not start, or whenever the drum hums but stays still. Have the model and serial number ready, usually on a label inside the door opening. We are an independent service, so the recommendation is based on what the test shows, whether that is a new belt, a fuse or a control. You can book a visit and describe what happens when you press Start.

Frequently asked questions
Why won’t my Frigidaire dryer start even though the display is lit?
The most likely causes are a door that is not fully latched, a control lock, or a Start press that was too short. Close the door firmly, release any lock, select a cycle and hold Start for a second.
Can a tripped breaker stop an electric dryer from starting?
Yes. An electric dryer uses a two-pole breaker, and if one half trips the display may stay lit while the drum and heater do not run. Switch the whole breaker off and on.
Is it safe to look inside a dryer that won’t start?
Only after you unplug it. Never remove panels on a plugged-in dryer, and if you smell gas, leave the area and call your gas utility.
When should I call a technician?
Call if the dryer hums without turning, stays dead after the basic checks, or shows a control-board or heat code. You can book a visit with the model number ready.
