The frigidaire dishwasher repair or replace question has one feature that sets it apart from the same question about any other appliance in the kitchen: a failing dishwasher can damage the house. A refrigerator that dies costs you the groceries. A dishwasher that leaks slowly under a cabinet for a month costs you the cabinet, the floor and sometimes the ceiling below. That changes how long it is reasonable to wait and see.
First, rule out the things that are not faults
A large share of “the dishwasher is finished” calls turn out to be maintenance rather than failure. A filter that has never been cleaned will leave dishes gritty and the machine smelling. Blocked spray arm holes produce patchy cleaning that looks like weak pressure. Hard water scale on the heating element slows drying and dulls glassware.
All three mimic serious faults and all three are free to fix. Before deciding anything, pull the filter, rinse it, clear the spray arm holes with a toothpick and run an empty hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner. The leak rule
Water outside the machine is the one symptom that does not get a waiting period. A dishwasher sits inside a cabinet run, against a wall, usually over a floor that was never meant to get wet, and the leak you can see at the front is often not where the water is going.
Find the source before deciding anything. A perished door gasket leaks at the front and is a cheap, straightforward repair. A failed door seal at the bottom corner of the door is similar. A cracked hose or a loose clamp is a repair. But a tub that has split or corroded through is not repairable in any way worth paying for, and that finding ends the conversation.
Until you know which it is, pull the machine out and put a towel underneath, or switch off the water supply at the valve. A slow leak over weeks does more damage than a dramatic one that gets your attention immediately.
Age against repair history
A dishwasher in the first half of its expected life with a single failed part is a repair, essentially always. Past the decade, the calculation changes — and the useful signal is not the year on the plate but what has already been replaced.
A machine on its first fault at eleven years has been reliable and will probably continue. A machine that has had a control board and a pump and is now asking for a motor is telling you where it is going. Count the repairs, not the years.
What replacement really involves
- Removal and disposal of the old machine, which is rarely included in a delivery price.
- Connections. Water supply, drain and electrical all have to be made, and old shutoff valves sometimes fail the moment they are turned.
- Fit. Standard widths help, but height varies with modern models and a countertop that has settled over the years can make a nominally identical unit a tight fit.
- Panel and handle. An integrated machine behind a cabinet panel needs the panel refitted, and the new door’s mounting may not match.
- Flooring. If the floor was laid around the old appliance, the new one may not slide into the same space.
Against that, a new machine is genuinely quieter and uses noticeably less water and energy than one from a decade ago — real savings that belong in the comparison, even if they rarely pay for a replacement by themselves.
What is almost always worth fixing
Drain pumps are common failures, accessible on most designs, and the part is not expensive — that is the fault behind most not draining complaints. Door latches and hinges are straightforward. Spray arms are consumables. Water inlet valves are a routine job. Heating elements are usually worth doing, and they are behind a large share of poor drying complaints once the rinse aid has been ruled out.
Float switches and door gaskets are small parts that cause alarming symptoms — a machine that overfills or leaks looks terminal and is often neither.
Noise, and what it tells you about age
Dishwashers get louder as they age, and the reason is usually not the motor. Insulation settles, mounting clips loosen, the machine works its way slightly out of level, and small hard objects — a cherry pit, a shard of glass — take up residence in the sump and rattle for years.
Before accepting noise as a sign the appliance is finished, check that it is level and firmly secured to the counter or cabinet, and look in the sump. A grinding noise during drain that stops when the sump is cleared was never a failing pump.
Genuine bearing noise sounds different: a rising whine that tracks the wash cycle and gets worse over months rather than appearing overnight. That one is a real signal, and on an older machine it belongs in the replacement column.
The way to decide without guessing
Get the diagnosis before you price a new machine. A firm answer about which part has failed turns a vague judgment into arithmetic, and the diagnostic visit is a small fraction of either path. Then compare the repair against the full replacement cost — appliance, removal, fitting and any cabinet or plumbing work — rather than against the shelf price.
Ask about parts availability at the same time. A control board still in production is a different proposition from one that exists only as a refurbished unit, and that answer often decides the question on its own.
When to call
Call immediately for any water outside the machine. Call for a diagnosis when the dishwasher will not drain, will not fill, will not heat, stops mid-cycle, or leaves dishes dirty after the filter and spray arms have been cleared.
