Good Frigidaire refrigerator installation leveling comes down to four things: a solid, level spot with the clearances your owner’s manual lists, a grounded outlet within reach, front feet set so the cabinet leans slightly back, and a short wait before you load food. Measure the opening and the path to it first, because most installation problems start with a refrigerator that does not fit, not with the machine.
What should you check before the refrigerator arrives?
Measure the opening width, height and depth, and compare them to the dimensions on the model page or in the manual. On our site, for example, the FRFS2823AS French-door model is listed at 36 inches wide, 70 inches high and 33 inches deep, and the counter-depth PRMC2285AF is listed at 36 inches wide and 31.875 inches deep. Measure the path too: doorways, turns in a hallway and the door swing. Remove the doors or handles only as your manual describes, because a door that is forced through a tight space can be damaged.
Check the floor with a level. A refrigerator is heavy when full, so a soft or sloping spot, or a floor that flexes, is a reason to fix the floor first.
How much space does the refrigerator need around it?
A refrigerator gets rid of heat through coils at the back or bottom, and it needs air to do that. The clearances at the top, sides and back differ by model, so take the numbers from the owner’s manual and not from a rule of thumb. Pushing the unit tight against a wall or enclosing it without the stated clearance can make it run long and warm. Make sure the doors can open far enough to pull out the drawers and shelves, which is a common surprise with a cabinet beside the refrigerator.
How do you level a Frigidaire refrigerator?
Most refrigerators stand on adjustable front feet, and many have rollers at the back. Place the level on top of the cabinet, or on a shelf if the manual says so, and turn each front foot a little at a time. The goal is a cabinet that does not rock and that leans very slightly toward the back, so a door that you open partway swings closed by itself. Do not raise the front far above the back, and do not leave a foot hanging in the air. Turn the feet only with the unit pulled out far enough to reach, and have a second person ready if you must tilt it, because the refrigerator can tip.

How do you connect power and water?
Plug the refrigerator into a grounded outlet; the owner’s manual says whether your model wants a circuit of its own. Do not use an adapter that removes the ground, and do not use an extension cord. Wiring or an outlet that is damaged or does not match the plug is an electrician’s job. If your refrigerator makes ice or dispenses water, it needs a water line, and the connection should follow the owner’s manual. A line that is kinked, pinched behind the unit or fitted loosely will leak. If water ever reaches an outlet or you see sparks or smell burning, switch off the breaker at the panel while standing on a dry floor, and never pull a plug from a wet outlet.
What mistakes spoil an installation?
The same few errors turn up again and again. The first is pushing the refrigerator flush against the wall, which cuts the airflow around it and can leave the door handle hitting a cabinet. The second is leveling by eye, which leaves a door that hangs open or one that slams. The third is a water line pinched behind the unit, which leaks only after a few days. The fourth is loading the shelves with warm groceries straight away, which makes a new refrigerator run for a long time before it reaches its temperature. Taking the time to measure and check these things is cheaper than moving the unit twice, and the checks cost nothing.
What should you do after it is in place?
Push it back slowly with the feet turned to the right height, and watch that the water line and cord are not crushed. Do not load food yet. Your manual says how long a refrigerator should stand after transport and how long it takes to reach its operating temperature, and we do not quote times here. Set the controls as the manual describes, and give it time to cool before you fill it. Our water filter replacement guide covers a filter installed at the same time.
If you are still choosing a model, read our Frigidaire refrigerator buying guide. If it does not cool after a sensible wait, our refrigerator not cooling guide is next.
When should a technician do it?
Call a technician when the floor needs work, when the outlet is not grounded, when you cannot level the unit safely, or when a water connection or any panel needs to be touched. Do not open the back or lower panels yourself. Our Frigidaire refrigerator repair page explains how a visit works.
